Exploring the Edgewater Volunteer Fire Department

Spring is Here — Change Your Clocks, Check Your Smoke Detectors

Spring has arrived — and with it, Daylight Saving Time. As you set your clocks forward, take a moment to refresh your home safety routine by checking your smoke detectors. A few minutes now can save lives later.

Why check your smoke detectors?

  • Life-saving device: Smoke detectors are essential for early warning in a fire.
  • Regular maintenance: Checking them twice a year ensures they’ll work when you need them most.

How to check your smoke detectors

  1. Test each detector: Press the test button on every unit — it should sound a loud alarm.
  2. Replace batteries: If the alarm chirps or beeps at intervals, replace the batteries immediately. Consider replacing batteries once a year as a precaution.
  3. Inspect for damage: Look for cracks, dirt, or paint covering the unit. If a detector is more than 10 years old, replace it.
  4. Ensure proper placement: Install detectors in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas (hallways), and on every floor of the home, including basements.

Quick tip: Keep detectors clean by vacuuming around vents and dusting the unit annually.

Keep your family safe

When you change your clocks, change your batteries (or test hardwired units). If you need help installing or testing detectors, contact your local fire department or visit our website for resources and free safety checks.
