I grew up in the volunteer fire department. My grandfather, uncles, and father were all members of a volunteer company, and in my first year of life, I lived right next door to the station. I spent most of my childhood looking for change in the sofa cushions to get snacks from the snack machine, and after bingo, we searched for bingo chips.

Memorable Experiences as a Volunteer

I have had many memorable experiences as a volunteer, from assisting in the delivery of a sweet baby boy to witnessing the success of our CPR efforts. Just last week, I helped my 4th-grade teacher feel better! I love helping people; it’s in my DNA.

Skills and Lessons Learned

Through my volunteer work, I have learned to care for patients through my EMT class and various EMS conferences. I’ve developed the ability to watch and listen for important details and gained knowledge about firefighting through my training at the station. Over the years, I’ve also understood how people experience life and loss, which has deepened my compassion and capacity for handling trauma. All of this has significantly enriched my life outside of the department.

The Role of Volunteers in the Community

The most important role of a volunteer firefighter is to serve the community to the best of their ability, providing calm and support during the worst times in people’s lives.

Encouragement for Potential Volunteers

To anyone considering volunteering but feeling unsure, I say, Do it! It is one of the most rewarding things I have ever been a part of. It’s challenging both physically and emotionally at times, but it has truly made me a better person.

Balancing Responsibilities

I am a teacher Monday through Friday during the day and a mother 24/7. I prioritize my family and self-care, and as a busy person, I try to maintain a regular schedule that includes my volunteer time. I commit to at least one shift a week with the fire department.

Motivation to Continue Volunteering

I genuinely enjoy helping people, and working on the ambulance fulfills that desire. Whether I’m making a significant save with my team or simply helping someone off the floor, I feel accomplished and fulfilled.
