Edgewater, MD – The Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Department is proud to announce its evolution into the Edgewater Volunteer Fire Department – Home of the Woodland Beach Volunteers. This change signifies our commitment to serving the entire Edgewater community while honoring our rich history.
We are launching the “Ignite the Future—Building Tomorrow’s Fire Station Today” capital campaign. With newly approved land on Stepney’s Lane, between Routes 214 and 2, and approved architectural plans in place, we will begin construction in early 2025. This facility will include additional vehicle and equipment storage, advanced safety features, enhanced communication systems, community gathering space, and direct access to major roadways, significantly boosting our response efficiency.
“This new fire station is essential for us to continue providing exceptional service to our growing community,” said Mike Purcell, President of the Edgewater Volunteer Fire Department. “It’s an investment in the safety and well-being of Edgewater’s residents.”
Chief John Sweeney added, “Our commitment to this community is unwavering. The new station will enhance our response capabilities and provide a much-needed facility upgrade.”
Alongside our capital campaign, we proudly unveil our updated logo, which retains the traditional shield shape and integrates the Firefighter’s Cross. This symbolizes our commitment to Fire, Marine, Rescue, and EMS services. Since 1946, we have stood as a cornerstone of safety, with 25 career personnel and over 100 volunteers dedicated to protecting homes, families, and businesses in Edgewater.
We encourage the community to get involved by discussing the campaign, becoming social media ambassadors, volunteering in various capacities, or donating. Each contribution helps us maintain Edgewater as a safe haven.

To this end, the fire station’s name will be transitioned to better represent the growth and changing times of the Edgewater community. As a successful combination fire station, we will continue to support the Edgewater Volunteer Fire Department by ensuring consistent around-the-clock career staffing as we have done since the inception of the County Fire Department. We will continue to work collaboratively to meet the needs of the community while always trying to make improvements.
